PSD/Madeira leader and head of the PSD/CDS-PP coalition list for the September 24 regional elections, Miguel Albuquerque, this Monday rejected any possibility of agreement with Chega, which he classified as a “centralist” party and autonomy”.
“People here in Madeira must have the idea that Chega is a party, like all nationalist parties, that favors centralism and the extinction of autonomy,” he said, then stressed: “We’re not going to make deals with crocodiles in the hope of being eaten last.”
Miguel Albuquerque spoke on the sidelines of a visit to the Nephrocare Clinic in Funchal, a licensed hemodialysis unit, where he traveled as President of the Regional Government (PSD/CDS-PP).
“We have no way of reaching an agreement [com o Chega]’ he stated in response to questions from journalists about the ongoing election process, stressing that it is an ‘anti-autonomist’ party and as such is ‘anti-Madeira’.
Miguel Albuquerque, however, said Chega, like the Bloco de Esquerda and the Communist Party — which he classified as “anti-system parties” — has a right to exist because it has been ratified by the Constitutional Court.
“This idea that there are radicals on the left that need to be nurtured and radicals on the right that need to be purged with me doesn’t work,” he said, reiterating that there will be no agreements with Chega even if the PSD/CDS -PP The coalition does not win an absolute majority in the parliamentary elections on 24 September.
For this electoral act, the Court of Funchal has validated 13 candidacies, corresponding to two coalitions and 11 other parties, but the final admitted lists will not be posted until September 4.
Drawing the order of the thirteen political forces on the ballot, the Portuguese Workers’ Party (PTP) comes first, followed by Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP), Bloco de Esquerda (BE), Partido Socialista (PS), Chega ( CH), React Include Integrate (RIR), Earth Party (MPT), National Democratic Alternative (ADN), Somos Madeira (PSD/CDS-PP coalition), People-Animals-Nature (PAN), Livre (L), CDU – – Unitary Democratic Coalition (PCP/PEV) and Liberal Initiative (IL).
The previous regional elections took place on 22 September 2019.
In these elections, 16 parties and a coalition competed in one constituency for the 47 seats in the Parliament of Madeira: PSD, PS, CDS-PP, JPP, BE, Chega, IL, PAN, PDR, PTP, PNR, Aliança, Partido da Terra – MPT, PCTP/MRPP, PURP, RIR and CDU (PCP/PEV).
The PSD then lost its first absolute majority in the Regional Legislative Assembly of Madeira, which it had held since 1976, electing 21 deputies and forming a coalition government with the CDS-PP (three deputies).
The PS elected 19 deputies, the JPP three and the PCP one.
