Emmanuel Macron sees a “fatal nonsense” in the limitation to two five-year terms

The president, who until now had always talked about limiting presidential terms to two successive five-year terms, made very different statements during the Saint-Denis meeting.

In the midst of a presidential attempt to lower the pressure, the departure of Emmanuel Macron is surprising. Questioned by Jordan Bardella about the hypothesis of the return of the seven-year mandate, the head of state who received all the party leaders in Saint-Denis this Wednesday got into the plate.

“Limiting presidential terms was a fatal lie,” the head of state told party leaders, according to information from BFMTV, confirming comments broadcast by Jean-Luc Mélenchon.

“What matters to me is not lasting but doing”

In the current state of the Constitution, the president is not authorized to serve more than “two consecutive terms” according to the 2008 constitutional review. To the chagrin of a part of the macronie: it was concerned about a succession war within the presidential camp by 2027.

The former President of the National Assembly, Richard Ferrand, very close to the Head of State, had also indicated in the newspaper columns Figaro last June to lament “the limitation in the time of the presidential term”.

The Breton finally backtracked the next day, finally stating that it was not necessary to change “the rules during the match.” Until now, the tenant of the Élysée had ensured that the subject was evacuated.

“What matters to me is not to last but to do,” explained the head of state in the columns of Provence in June.

“Maybe a Joke”

A few weeks later, during his visit to French Polynesia, Emmanuel Macron mentioned his possible successor, estimating that his former Prime Minister Édouard Philippe could “assume power” at the Élysée Palace in 2027 and stating that he is concerned “that it really there is a sequel” of his own action.

Should we, therefore, take seriously the president’s statements behind closed doors, without a telephone around the table, without collaborators or journalists? In the field of the presidential majority, we tried to defuse the controversy.

“It is possible that he made a joke on this subject,” a majority participant qualifies AFP.

On the side of La France Insoumise, Jean-Luc Mélenchon did not fail to point out the president’s words, calling for a “revocation referendum” to force Emmanuel Macron to resign.

“It would be a general relief,” said the rebel former presidential candidate on his X account (former Twitter). In the Constitution of the Fifth Republic this provision does not exist.
