Immigration bill: Bruno Le Maire advocates for a “message of firmness”

Invited this Sunday to BFM Politique, the Minister of Economy did not rule out the holding of referendums on various issues. As for immigration, he calls for respect for “legal texts and regulations.”

“The message conveyed by Gérald Darmanin’s text must be one of firmness.” A guest of BFM Politique this Sunday, the Minister of the Economy, Bruno Le Maire, reacted to the immigration bill, postponed several times and which must resume its legislative path at the beginning of the school year.

The minister, who pleads for a “firm” speech, ruled out a referendum on the issue, invoking the laws in force. “On immigration, the first thing to do, before a referendum, is to enforce the laws and regulations,” he said.

“The first priority is less to consult than to decide: to ensure that the obligations to leave the territory are respected, that those who do not have the right to be in our territory leave,” he added.

Before hammering: “I am in favor of referendums. There are a number of immediate issues on which we can consult the French (…) but when it comes to immigration, I think the priority is respect for the rules. ” . A speech coincided with that of the Prime Minister. “The aim is for this law to be voted on quickly, so we are not going to wait for a referendum on this issue,” Elisabeth Borne told RTL on Sunday.

The mayor opposes the arrival of foreign labor

Regarding the section on “jobs in tension”, Bruno Le Maire is not in favor of using people of foreign origin to work in these sectors where there is a shortage of labor. “Should we, for jobs in tension, resort to foreign labor? My answer is no. We have gone from 9 to 7% unemployment rate, going from 7 to 5% will be much more difficult,” he explained.

However, he was in favor of the regularization of people of foreign origin who already work in France. “When you are in a restaurant, in a public construction company (…) when there is a person of immigrant origin, who speaks perfect French, who is integrated, who respects our culture, who participates in building the nation, should they be ? Have you been granted a residence permit? My answer is yes.”

The examination of the immigration bill was interrupted after the approval of the pension reform, while the text was adopted in a Senate committee, where the majority of the right had clearly hardened it.
