PSD is pressuring the government to pass tax cuts this year

The challenge has a date: September 22. On that day, after the debate that took place two days earlier, in addition to this year’s reduction of IRS rates at all levels – with the exception of the last one worth €1,200 million – the mandatory update of IRS levels will be in effect. to vote based on inflation, a mechanism that allows parliament to decide what to do with the budget surplus and exemption from IRS and TSU for productivity bonuses worth up to 6% of annual base salary and the proposal for young people up to age 35 to pay maximum 15% IRS.

Hugo Carneiro, parliamentary vice-president of the PSD, challenged the government and socialist deputies to “come forward and approve these measures that will benefit the Portuguese”, stating that “the country is not in a position to postpone these decisions”.

“This is not a partisan fight, but a fight for tax justice, which should unite everyone.”, he underlined.

Eurico Brilhante Dias, parliamentary leader of the PS, immediately distanced himself from the proposal, arguing that the socialist majority “acts predictably and in a balanced way” and reaffirmed that “the Stability Program adopted by the [já] provides for a reduction in the IRS. This reduction and background work will be carried out within the framework of the state budget, as promised.” How and in what way? It’s not known yet.

The Deputy Secretary General of the PS, João Torres, had already classified the proposal of the PSD in August a “deception” based “on a lie” which “misled younger people, failed to respond to the country’s challenges and productivity problems, jeopardized workers’ careers and their social protections, and limited state action to respond to situations of an unexpected or exceptional nature”.

And yesterday not even the opening of the PSD for more proposals to enter the debate – ‘The discussion about tax cuts is too important to speak of a blockade’said Hugo Carneiro – received a positive response from the PS that summarizes the social-democratic intentions in a “kind of fiscal auction”.

Montenegro had already anticipated the socialist refusal last week and how it would happen: “It belongs to an able man what he [Costa] will suffice: it will not accept the PSD proposal and will tell the country that it will make an even bigger proposal next year. But the PSD makes proposals for this year and for the year it will propose for 2024.”.

The second parliamentary term starting on the 15th [Pizarro será nesse dia o primeiro dos ministros a estar na mira da oposição] on the 21st there will be a reassessment of the decree on housing vetoed by Marcelo [PS já manifestou a intenção de ignorar o veto] and on the 22nd the debate on the start of the school year, planned by the PCP.

On the 27th, biweekly debates with the Prime Minister return, as they did between 2008 and 2020. After the Costa-Rio deal, they became bimonthly from then on.

The next day, the government proposal on tobacco, which caused so much controversy, will be discussed.

On September 29, the IL will debate its project for a new basic health law.

However, the PSD confirmed that it will hold parliamentary sessions on October 16 and 17, devoted to the next state budget, which will be delivered on October 10.

André Ventura yesterday announced another motion of censure to the government.
