Earthquake in Morocco: the French political class expresses its support and emotion

Several members of the political class spoke out to express their emotion after the earthquake in Morocco. Some also called for support from France and the European Union.

The morning after the violent earthquake in Morocco, the French political class expressed its support for the Moroccan people, while the number of fatalities had already risen to more than 820 by midday. After Emmanuel Macron offered help from France and several members of the government, Tangier-born La France insoumise leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon expressed his “moved thoughts.”

He spoke of “painful memories of the Agadir earthquake, where all the men of my family from Tangier were mobilized.”

Also on the left, the leader of the Socialist Party, Olivier Faure, also expressed his “solidarity with the Moroccan people”, and the national secretary of Europe Ecology Les Verts (EELV), Marine Tondelier, her “thoughts for Morocco”.

The mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, also expressed her support and thoughts for Moroccans. “Paris will be by your side,” she wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Calls for solidarity with Morocco

The leader of the French Communist Party, Fabien Roussel, said he was “wholeheartedly with the Moroccan people who are facing a terrible tragedy,” hoping “that France and the European Union will provide their help as soon as possible.”

Stéphane Séjourné, secretary general of the Renaissance, the presidential party, also estimated that “France and Europe must be united in solidarity in the face of the tragedy that mourned the heart of Morocco last night.”

On the right, the head of the Republicans, Éric Ciotti, spoke of the “most important earthquake” in the history of Morocco and considered that “France must be at Morocco’s side in these terrible moments.”

The president of the Île-de-France region, Valérie Pécresse, said she was “shocked” to learn of the “tragic night that Morocco has just experienced.”

“The Île-de-France region will stand alongside the relief forces and the associations working to help the victims!” he added in X.

The president of the National Group, Jordan Bardella, expressed his “support for the Moroccan people.” “Thoughts for the victims, the injured and the thousands of Moroccans who remain this morning without news of a loved one,” he added.

Marine Le Pen said “with all my heart with Morocco and the Moroccan people affected last night by a tragic earthquake […]”.

According to a provisional report, the magnitude 7 earthquake left at least 820 dead and 672 injured.
