Marcelo finds disagreements with Prime Minister ‘normal’

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, this Saturday classified the disagreements with the Prime Minister as “normal, in eight years”, since they arise from the functioning of democracy.

“There have never been disagreements that are not part of the normal functioning of democracy; these are normal disagreements that occur over the course of eight years”said Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

The head of state spoke to journalists at Monte Sobral, in Alcáçovas, the Alentejo parish where the Capitães de Abril first met fifty years ago, after being asked about the return of convergence between Belém and São Bento.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa took part on Saturday with Prime Minister António Costa in the ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Captains Movement.

The head of state insisted that “in institutional terms the Portuguese state is one”.

Referring specifically to Portugal’s support for Morocco, which was hit by an earthquake on Friday that caused hundreds of deaths and injuries, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said that Portugal “is exemplary in fundamental terms both in foreign and domestic policy” and that “convergence and effectiveness is total”.
