Abaya ban: Manuel Bompard denounces an “absurd” and “dangerous” decision

The coordinator of Francia Insumisa reacted on the BFMTV program to the government’s decision to ban the abaya in schools. He deplored a “danger of stigmatization.”

A week after the start of the school year, Manuel Bompard, MP for Bouches-du-Rhône and coordinator of LFI, reacted virulently to the ban on the abaya in schools, decided by the government.

“I believe that this measure should not be the priority for the start of the school year and will cause situations of discrimination,” declared Manuel Bompard. “And we already had some this week.”

“Stigmatization” and “arbitrariness”

The deputy said he feared a “danger of stigmatization and arbitrariness” in the application of this ban. “I got an email from a young woman who had a blue and white floral dress and she had to stay there all afternoon constantly,” he said.

“How are you going to define what is in the order of a long dress, and what is in the order of the abaya? I am afraid that the definition is based on the supposed religion of the person,” he said – he lamented.

Various appeals presented to the Council of State

Asked about the threats made by a student’s father against a director who had denied his daughter access to the establishment, Manuel Bompard recalled that LFI “reacted immediately through the voice of our Clermont-Ferrand deputy Marianne Maximi, who said that If these threats were proven, they are obviously unbearable and unacceptable.”

Manuel Bompard, however, defended the “right to challenge an absurd and dangerous decision, which has occupied us for three weeks, while the school faces issues of enormous importance for this beginning of the school year.”

Several appeals have been filed with the Council of State against this ban. While the first, formed by the association Action Droits des Musulmans, was rejected, the head of LFI said that he expected other decisions from the Council of State. He did not rule out taking over the institution himself with his party, although he declared that the “associations” have “a greater right to act than opposition groups” on this issue.
