Costa: “We are nothing more than political Picardy. I don’t feel there is radicalism” in Portugal

The Prime Minister today believed that there is nothing but political chaos in Portugal, which is normal in a democracy, arguing that the country is characterized by a broad consensus and sovereign bodies that function regularly.

This image was relayed by António Costa to journalists in Santiago de Chile, after they were asked whether Portugal could be moving towards political radicalization, as is happening in several South American countries.

“In Portugal I do not feel that there is any radicalism and the country is characterized as one of the most stable countries with the broadest political consensus,” said the leader of the Portuguese government at the end of a lunch with national businessmen. who invest in Chile.

At this point, António Costa made a point to distinguish that “it is one thing that there is some moment of greater political anger”.

“But we have not been freed from political contempt, which is very healthy. I think that at the moment in Europe there should be only two countries with an absolute majority, and in the rest there is enormous political fragmentation,” he emphasized .

According to the Prime Minister, in Portugal, even without absolute majorities, we have been practically living in situations of “great stability” since 2011 at least.

“Last year there was talk of a dissolution of parliament, but the Portuguese, with their insurmountable common sense, also resolved that quickly,” he said.

When asked whether he considers political antics normal, António Costa said they are “part of democracy”.

“Democracy means a way to organize pluralism. Fortunately, the sovereign bodies function with enormous regularity and normality in Portugal, which is very healthy,” he advocated.
