What is the role of the Senate?

The Senate has held a special place since the last legislative electionsin June 2022. This deadline caused an important change: the presidential side now only has a relative majority in the National Assembly.

As a result, the government is seeking agreements with the opposition on its bills. So far, it favors the right. However, this is more reliable for the executive in the Senate, where it has the majority.

However, the Senate has not become the executive’s best ally. This would mean forgetting its mission to control the government and evaluate public policies. In this way, the Upper House has demonstrated its independence on numerous occasions in recent years and also recently.

Secretary of State Sonia Backès is beaten in New Caledonia

Bad news for most. The Secretary of State for Citizenship, Sonia Backès, candidate for the Senate elections in New Caledonia, was defeated in the second round by the pro-independence Robert Xowie.

It is the first time that an independentist enters the Senate.

In the first round, the dissident candidate of Les Républicains, Georges Naturel, was also elected, and will go to the Senate.

Who can vote in senatorial elections?

Senators are chosen by the so-called electors. Among them, there is an overwhelming majority of municipal councilors.

The 160,000 voters must vote in the Senate elections, under penalty of a fine of 100 euros.

Politically, it is the last municipal elections that mainly determine the outcome of the elections. But since the Senate is only half renewed every three years, it sometimes takes years to see municipal elections really have an effect on senatorial results.

For example, the senators whose mandate is at stake today were elected in the 2014 municipal elections.

Here we explain the voting method.
