The PCP Secretary General on Sunday opined that the CDU’s result in Madeira’s regional parliamentary elections was “very positive” and said the PSD and CDS suffered an “undisguised defeat” by losing their absolute majority.
Speaking to journalists at the PCP’s national headquarters in Lisbon, Paulo Raimundo reflected on this the CDU’s “very positive” result, “with more votes, more percentage, confirmation of parliamentary representation”, is “an expression of recognition of the value of intervention in defense of workers and people in the Madeira region”.
“An intervention that overlapped with campaigns to diminish the CDU and the trust it gained through its daily work with the people and workers,” he stated.
Paulo Raimundo believed that the CDU’s achievement came despite the “huge inequality of resources and the unjustified discrimination at national and local levels”.
The PCP Secretary General also defended that the inability to achieve an absolute majority by the PSD/CDS coalition “constituted an undisguised defeat which, regardless of the institutional arrangements that could be created to try to reverse the disastrous course of the region cannot be ignored. “.
“A defeat that, far beyond the electoral expression that the CDU has obtained, in its contribution, in its action of denunciation, of permanent electoral intervention alongside the people and the workers, has in itself been an essential factor in the erosion of the social and electoral power. support from the PSD and CDS,” he stated.
Regarding the PS’s result, the PCP leader opined that the “excessive electoral loss” essentially “discredits the discredit resulting from the confirmed absence of options distinct from the current regional majority”, as well as a ” confirmed feeling of waste and uselessness. felt by thousands of voters” who had voted for the Socialists four years ago.
Regarding the debut of Chega and IL in the Legislative Assembly of Madeira, Paulo Raimundo opined that this was due to the “media projection of their demagogic and populist message”, which managed to “hide their political co-responsibility in the fundamental options that are there’. the cause of the problems and difficulties of workers and people”.
“It is a different policy that the region needs, a policy that has the most coherent and solid expression in the CDU and that guarantees a position defined by the commitment that has always been expressed and has always been with the workers and the people .” , he claimed.
When asked whether he believes that these regional elections can have a national interpretation, the PCP Secretary General said yes. He stated that the loss of the absolute majority of the PSD/CDS is a “sign of discouragement” and also projected the socialist outcome for the national plan.
“The significant electoral loss of the PS is in itself an expression of the wrong choices made in Madeira, but also of a path that the Government of the Republic itself is developing and that clearly does not respond to the people’s problems “, he said.
When asked whether he considers this result positive, as it was the first election he participated in since taking office as general secretary of the PCP in November 2022, Paulo Raimundo replied: “I am personally very satisfied, not necessarily because it is the first election are. as general secretary, but because of the very positive results that above all have a very important value for the people of Madeira”.
The CDU today elected a deputy to the Legislative Assembly of Madeira, maintaining the representation it has had since 2019, but receiving more votes, 3,677, about 2.7%. In 2019 he received 2,577 votes.
Four years ago, the Social Democrats lost for the first time the absolute majority they had retained since 1976 and formed a coalition government with the CDS-PP.
