The PSD chairman expressed his belief on Thursday that vice-president of the parliamentary bench Hugo Carneiro is not involved in any embezzlement of funds or illegal financing of the party, saying he is awaiting further clarification.
Speaking to journalists at the end of a visit to a high school in Lisbon, Luís Montenegro was asked about the news from CNN Portugal, according to which A request was made for Hugo Carneiro’s parliamentary immunity to be lifted due to “suspicions of irregularities in the party’s accounts in the management of election campaign funds” during Rui Rio’s leadership.
“I am absolutely sure that this is in no way – even though I know the details of the process – this is not a case of embezzlement of funds, that is what was missing, and even less of illegal financing of the party,” said the spokesman. PSD chairman.

On July 12, the judicial police searched the house of former PSD president Rui Rio in Porto, and deputy Hugo Carneiro, as well as the party’s national headquarters in Lisbon, on suspicion of embezzlement and abuse of power in the period from 2018 to 2021.
It involved an alleged misuse of public funds by the party’s previous management, through funds from the Assembly of the Republic intended for advisory services to parliamentary groups and which would be used to pay party workers who would not serve in parliament to work.
