Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas argued on Saturday that the country needs more municipal policies to be stronger and that municipalities can do more, but need more resources to do so.
Carlos Moedas spoke as chairman of the board of the XXVIth Congress of the National Association of Municipalities, which takes place in Seixal, Setúbal.
The mayor defended that “the country needs more municipal policies” and stronger municipal policies, especially “in these difficult times”, and that “more municipal policies need more decentralization”, whether in education, healthcare or social action.
The mayor of Lisbon emphasized that local governments can do more in these and other areas, but they need resources to do so.
“The truth is, in a sense, we are still in this midbridge decentralization,” he said.
“We can’t stay in the middle of the bridge. We have to cross the bridge,” he added.
The ANMP will hold its XXVIth Congress this Saturday in Seixal, Setúbal district, with the main topics being the debate on autonomy and decentralization, territorial cohesion and local financing.
