BE will propose to increase the minimum wage to 900 euros in 2024

The Left Bloc will propose in parliament in January 2024 an increase in the national minimum wage to 900 euros and that this value be “updated throughout the year, taking into account inflation”.

This proposal is contained in the resolution of the National Council of BE, the highest body between the conventions that met this Sunday in Lisbon, a text which states that BE will propose in parliament an “immediate increase of the national minimum wage to 900 euros in January” will suggest. 2024 and that this value is updated throughout the year, taking into account inflation and the need to restore purchasing power.”

“[O BE] also proposes to initiate a negotiation process with the trade unions and structures representing public administration and state-owned enterprise employees, with the aim of updating the salaries of public administration employees, taking into account the increase in essential goods and the new structure of household expenditure, which can also serve as a reference for the private sector,” reads the resolution distributed to journalists at the end of the meeting.

In the text, the bloc leaders emphasize that in Portugal “the average salary is not sufficient to cover basic family expenses, such as housing, higher education, transport, healthcare and food costs”, and that in the main public services “the quality and coverage has deteriorated” and “their professionals are impoverished and losing their expectations”.

“Once again the government is presenting huge budget surpluses, far above the values foreseen in the state budget. This is a sign of poor policy and budgetary management as it translates into incorrect revenue forecasts and inadequate blocks for budgeting and implementing necessary expenditures.”

For BE, correcting these deviations implies reducing the burden that the state places on families.

The party also criticized the right to a response “centered on the regressive downsizing of the IRS,” which it defined as “deception and irresponsibility.”

“With a total amount of 1,200 million euros, the PSD proposal will do nothing to counteract the process of impoverishment and inequality, but rather worsen it,” the blockers claimed.
