PS/Madeira leader does not submit new application and acknowledges failure to meet targets

PS/Madeira president Sérgio Gonçalves announced that he will not run again for the leadership of the regional structure in the next internal elections. He acknowledged that the party did not meet the targets set for the regional legislature on September 24.

“I will fulfill my mandate as president of the Socialist Party of Madeira until the end, but I will not be a candidate for the leadership of the Socialist Party of Madeira in the next internal elections,” Sérgio Gonçalves told a press conference. took place at the party’s regional headquarters in Funchal.

When asked why he did not resign, the Socialist opined that despite having failed in the objectives he set for the regional offices, “there is no reason to resign” the mandate that “expires in a few months” not to be fulfilled.

“I am only making a public decision not to run again for another term as leader of the Socialist Party of Madeira,” he said, ensuring, however, that he would serve his term as deputy.

“I will continue and remain available to the party as a substitute and in anything that may be useful in the future,” stressed Sérgio Gonçalves, who was elected president of PS/Madeira in February last year.

The Socialist refused to allow the party to become more unstable at the regional level, arguing that “the PS is becoming stronger, has more and more competent cadres and has clearly demonstrated that, in relation to every other political force in Madeira, on concrete solutions to the problems of Madeirans, to the problems of the region”.

“And I am sure that in the future the country will continue to follow this path of confirmation as an alternative, as the only alternative, and again, unfortunately, for the worst reasons, the people of Madeira realized that only voting for the PS Madeira can change. ” he reinforced.

Sérgio Gonçalves also said that there was “a collective desire for change”, which could be observed during the election campaign and which contributed to “the confirmation of the end of a PSD majority”.

“A dying PSD who was forced to find crutches to stay on his feet. And it seems that in politics anything is possible to stay in power. For me that is not the case, in politics not everything goes well and I cannot accept that. that is the case,” he added.

The PSD/CDS-PP coalition won the regional legislature on September 24, but fell one deputy short of an absolute majority, and two days later a parliamentary advocacy deal was announced with the PAN, which won a mandate.

The PS chose eleven deputies – eight fewer compared to the 2019 regional parliaments –, the JPP five and Chega four, while the CDU (PCP/PEV), BE, PAN and IL each chose one deputy.
