The Prime Minister again this Monday rejected the full reinstatement of teachers’ service, saying the costs are “unsustainable for the country” and because “there must be equality” for all public sector careers.
In an interview with TVI/CNN, António Costa was asked whether he followed the PSD’s proposal for a full restoration of the frozen service of these professionals, over a period of five years.
“No, I have been very clear (…) I have no illusions, and therefore no frustrations. I am not going to commit to something that I know I cannot achieve and that is unsustainable for the country”he claimed.
Ironically, the Prime Minister said that he understood that the PSD, “who has lived well with the career stop”, “now wants to make up for lost time”but presented another argument to reject the Social Democrats’ proposal.
“I cannot recover the time of one career if I cannot recover all the others. We must treat everyone equally: we have applied to teachers what we have applied to other civil servants”he said, considering that the Azores and Madeira – where there was full recovery of time for this professional class – “had and should receive different treatment”.
António Costa argued that there are “new themes” in education and preferred to emphasize two measures that the government will apply for this professional class from next academic year: the increase from 10 to 63 in the number of pedagogical zone staff, to prevent the remote placement of teachers reduce, and the possibility that teachers placed in a school may be integrated into a school before completing three years of full teaching schedules.
