Carlos Moedas, president of the Lisbon City Council, announced Thursday that the city will celebrate “November 25 with a great initiative,” in addition to April 25, 1974, “because all dates count.”
Carlos Moedas spoke at Praça do Município in Lisbon, hosting the celebration of the Founding Day of the Republic, which marks 113 years today.
In his speech before several entities, including the Prime Minister António Costa, and before the speech of the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the Mayor of Lisbon emphasized that there are “data that become symbols”, which can be reduced “to merely ceremonial, repetitive and routine rituals” or “dates remembered on paper but felt by people with apathy”.
“We can make October 5 a new date that is celebrated by politicians but somehow ignored by people. Or we can see it as a starting signal for something better,” he said.
“I would like to take this opportunity to announce that in addition to the historic date of April 25, we will also celebrate November 25 with a great initiative. Because all dates count,” he added.
On Tuesday, the President of the Assembly of the Republic said at a press conference that the commemorations of the fiftieth anniversary of the military operation of November 25, 1975 are still outside the official program of parliamentary commemorations of the fiftieth anniversary of the Revolution of the Republic. April 25, 1975. 1974 and the 1976 Constitution.
“In the organizing committee we decided that the dates and events on which there was consensus among us would be considered as a programme. That is why we decided to focus on the sequence of the revolution of April 25, 1974, the first free elections, approval of the Constitution and the first elections for the Assembly of the Republic, the President of the Republic, regional and municipal autonomy,” explains Augusto Santos Silva.
Still on this issue of November 25, 1975, the former Foreign Minister then emphasized that this “does not mean that there will not be other initiatives to commemorate other dates”.
“Initiatives from parliamentary groups, the Leaders’ Conference or myself in this course,” he added.
