Israel: IL and BE exchange accusations, but the debate ends on a calm note in parliament

The attacks on Israel were at the center of the debate in parliament this Wednesday, starting on a tense tone between IL and BE, but ending with serenity and some consensus, at least in condemning the deaths of civilians.

IL leader Rui Rocha was the first to raise this issue – apart from his political statement on November 25 – accusing PCP and BE of “defending the most horrible dictators”, saying that “the terrible acts committed by Hamas has not merited a single word of condemnation in recent days, neither from BE nor from PCP.”

The bloc’s parliamentary leader, Pedro Filipe Soares, immediately called for the bank’s honor to be defended and accused Rui Rocha of lying.

“It was a lie when you accused BE of not saying anything to condemn Hamas. It is false, Mr. Vice President, read the newspapers, your word is false, it is a lie and you deliberately lied, which makes you a liar and so is he.” not a political liar, he is a liar in facts”shot.

Later it was the turn of the PSD and Livre to put the issue at the center of their political statements, with the bank’s vice president and leader of the JSD Alexandre Poço classifying the attacks on Israeli areas on Saturday as the “new Holocaust in Israel’. 2023”.

“Terrorist atrocity is condemned and opposed, there is no justification for it. The conflict that divides these people cannot be dragged into the mud of Hamas terror.”he defended.

The PSD said it recognizes the position of Portuguese diplomacy, which supports the two-state solution, and asked the PS to be careful in parliamentary alliances “with those who justify or excuse terrorism solely because of their hatred of their favorite targets: Israel, the United States or NATO”.

Livre’s sole deputy, Rui Tavares, whose intervention drew applause from the PS and PSD benches, called Hamas “a terrorist organization whose goal is the oppression of the Palestinian people.”

“Europe must be an arbiter of credibility in this conflict. What a lesson we learn in our politics if we turn this issue into a party weapon”he wailed.

For the PS, the bank’s vice-president Francisco César condemned “the acts of terrorism”, considering the attacks on civilians unjustifiable: “There is no doubt about this issue, there is no doubt about the conviction,” stated he.

The Socialist delegate said his seat was based on the words of United Nations Secretary General António Guterres that Israel – which has the “right to self-defense” – must base its retaliation on international law.

For BE, deputy Joana Mortágua again condemned the attacks “carried out by Hamas against civilians”, but believed that Israel “has already committed several war crimes” and warned that there will also be a total siege of Gaza.

The PCP, through deputy Bruno Dias, never referred to Hamas and expressed “deep regret for the victims of this tragedy.”

“The PCP has always distanced itself from violent actions that target population groups and do not serve the cause of the Palestinian people. We have always condemned violence against civilians. On this issue, it is important not to forget that Israel has many scores to answer for in its practice of occupation, violence and war, as has been evident in recent days.”criticized.

Chega deputy Diogo Pacheco de Amorim believed that in this “terrorist attack of indescribable brutality there is no place for the usual ‘yes, but'”, and challenged the PSD to condemn these “extreme left” positions.

“We condemn terrorist attacks by all and we hope that the response of the State of Israel takes into account proportionality in the response.”defended Poço, but added that “Hamas has taken hostage a population that it uses as a human shield.”

Another “delegate” of the Socialist bench, MP Pedro Delgado Alves, called on deputies to focus on what is within their power to do about this conflict: “the fight against anti-Semitism and discrimination based on ethnicity.”

“Let’s not simplify it and not think that the problem is ours, the problem belongs to the people who will spend another night full of uncertainty, horror and insecurity”he emphasized.

The facade of the Assembly of the Republic will be illuminated tonight with the colors of the Israeli flag “as an expression of solidarity with the Israeli people”, a decision that received the approval of the PS, PSD, Chega and IL.
