The PS and PSD reached a joint text this Thursday that “absolutely” condemns the Hamas terrorist attacks in Israel and emphasizes that this country has the right to defend itself “within the framework of international law.”
The statement of condolence, to which the Lusa agency had access, is an amalgamation of two texts initially presented to the Foreign Affairs Committee by the Portugal-Israel Parliamentary Friendship Group and Livre and agreed in recent days between the PS and PSD banks.
“The text that will be voted on is unequivocal in its condemnation of terrorist attacks, in solidarity with Israel and in its recognition of the right to its defense under international law,” stressed Lusa, the president of this friendship group, the vice president of the bank PSD and JSD leader Alexandre Poço.
Also in a conversation with Lusa, the vice-president of the PS bank, Francisco César, emphasized the agreement that was possible to reach with the social democratic bank, claiming that “this is an issue that always causes great disagreements” between the parties in Portugal. .
“Precisely for this reason, it was important to reach a basis of consensus that, on the one hand, unhesitatingly condemns the barbaric and terrorist acts of Hamas and expresses solidarity with the victims and the Israeli people, and on the other hand, emphasizes the importance of pursuing peace between the two peoples, respect for human rights, international law and an agreed solution between the parties, which includes respect for relevant UN resolutions and a two-state solution,” the Socialist parliamentarian said.
The condolence text “for all victims resulting from Hamas’s terrorist attacks on Israel” is expected to be voted on in the plenary on Friday.
“The Assembly of the Republic, meeting in plenary, absolutely, immediately and unequivocally condemns the Hamas terrorist attacks in Israel last Saturday, October 7, expresses its deepest regret for the victims of these attacks, especially children, and expresses solidarity with the families. and friends of these victims and with the Israeli people,” reads the text.
In the second point, the vote indicates that parliament “affirms its recognition of the right of the State of Israel to defend itself against acts of terrorism within the framework of international law.”
The condolence statement “hopes for the release of all hostages and abducted people and for an end to hostilities” and “calls not to cut off access to water, food or energy and to create humanitarian corridors so that humanitarian assistance can be delivered .” receive all assistance and support to the Palestinian people and innocent civilians in the Gaza Strip.”
The text also expresses “support for all efforts aimed at widening the circle of peace in the region and securing the national aspirations of the Israeli and Palestinian people through the resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through peace, respect for the self-determination of peoples and full respect for human rights on the basis of the two-state solution,” following “relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and previous agreements reached between Israelis and Palestinians.”
The Islamic group Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel on the 7th with thousands of rockets and the incursion of armed militiamen by land, sea and air.
In response, Israel bombed several Hamas infrastructure in the Gaza Strip from the air and imposed a total siege of the territory, cutting off water, fuel and electricity supplies.
