Last Saturday, the PS Secretary General defended the need for Portugal to set up a fund for investments after 2026 based on its budget surpluses and warned that it would be irresponsible for the country to spend everything it has now.
“We are all aware that the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) was of an extraordinary character, justified by exceptional circumstances related to the Covid-19 pandemic, and that it is not guaranteed that we will receive an extraordinary reinforcement in the next cycle of community funding of these resources. Not only is there more life outside the budget, there is also more life beyond 2026.”he stated in the speech he made at the opening of the meeting of the PS National Commission, which takes place at the Lisbon International Fair (FIL), in which he spoke about the main objectives of the government’s state budget proposal for 2024, the debate where it usually starts on Monday in the Assembly of the Republic.
While the Minister of Finance, Fernando Medina, listened to his intervention, António Costa considered it essential “to ensure that the country continues to have the capacity to invest beyond 2026” and for this purpose a fund was created in which “it is a part of the budget balance for 2023″.
“Yes, we could spend it all now, but it would be irresponsible with regard to the future because the country will have to maintain a strong public investment trajectory. And because we don’t know tomorrow, we have to create reserves today. that tomorrow it will be possible to continue to strengthen public investments,” he argued.
During the PS National Commission, the congress of this political force is scheduled for March 15, 16 and 17. The prospect is that it will take place in the north of the country, probably in Guimarães. This congress takes place less than three months before the European Parliament elections, which will take place in Portugal on 9 June.
The Congress Organizing Committee (COC) will also be elected within the PS National Committee. The PS leadership appointed Socialist deputy Pedro Carmo as president of this body, while minority sensitivity leader Daniel Adrião nominated lawyer Pedro Dias Pereira for that position.
The meeting will also mark the dates and locations of the next PS federative congresses, and the rules for the elections for the presidents of the federations of this party will be approved.
Still in relation to other internal processes, the PS National Commission will approve the rules for the election of the President and the National Political Commission of Socialist Women.
