Efacec. Liberal Initiative is moving forward with parliamentary investigation

The Liberal Initiative wants delegates to keep a close eye on Efacec’s reprivatization process. The idea was put forward by party leader Rui Rocha in a DN/TSF interview that we will publish on Friday.

Rocha challenged the PS majority to make this proposal feasible. However, if the Socialists fail to do so, IL challenges the PSD to provide the signatures of enough deputies for the proposal to potentially be imposed (that is, to move forward even if the Socialists oppose it).

The economy minister said on Wednesday that the state will inject another 160 million euros into Efacec, adding that this is “a happy day” to complete the sale of the company to German fund Mutares.

At a press conference at the Ministry of Economy, António Costa e Silva said that the sale of Efacec to Mutares had been signed and that the latter will inject 15 million euros in capital and 60 million euros in guarantees.

The State will inject another 160 million euros, he announced. So far, the state had already injected 200 million euros in supplies into the company (10 million euros per month since April 2022)

Costa e Silva emphasized the importance of Efacec as a “major technological company” for the Portuguese economy, mentioning several projects in which it is involved, adding that dropping the company would have been “disastrous for the Portuguese economy” and especially for the North region. .

“It would have a disastrous effect on the Portuguese economy and especially on the northern region, the Porto and Matosinhos region, which has already suffered from the closure of the Galp refinery. The collapse of Efacec would have devastating consequences,” he said.

The government official also stated that Mutuares is committed to maintaining Efacec’s operational and decision-making center in Portugal.

On June 7, the government approved the German company Mutares’ proposal for the privatization of Efacec, without disclosing the amounts involved.

The State has already injected 132 million euros into Efacec, plus another 85 million euros in guarantees.

In April, Parpública announced that it had received improved binding proposals from four candidates for the purchase of 71.73% of Efacec, as part of the company’s reprivatization process.

Efacec, headquartered in Matosinhos, has approximately 2,000 employees.
