The president of the republic announced on Thursday that he will dissolve parliament and schedule early parliamentary elections for March 10, following the resignation of the prime minister, António Costa, on Tuesday.
According to the Electoral Law for the Assembly of the Republic, the presentation of lists of candidates for deputies is “the responsibility of the competent bodies of the political parties” and occurs “until the 41st day before the date scheduled for the elections.” In this case on January 29, where the formalization of coalitions before the elections with the Constitutional Court took place a day earlier.
The election campaign will take place between February 25 and March 8, as the law stipulates that it starts on the fourteenth day before and ends at midnight on the day before the day designated for the elections.
The Prime Minister, António Costa, asked the President of the Republic to resign on Tuesday, who accepted.
António Costa is the target of an investigation by the Public Prosecution Service at the Supreme Court after suspects in a case related to matters surrounding lithium, green hydrogen and the Sines ‘data centre’ invoked his name for intervening to unblock proceedings .
On the day of his dismissal, António Costa refused to commit “any illegal or offensive act” and expressed his full willingness to cooperate with justice.
