The President of the Republic on Friday decreed the increase of the national minimum wage from the current 760 euros to 820 euros from January 2024, a decree approved by the government on Thursday, a Belém source told Lusa.

According to the statement of the Council of Ministers, Thursday “The legislative decree establishing the increase of the national minimum wage to 820 euros from 1 January 2024 was approved, in accordance with the commitments made in the context of the Strengthening of the Medium-Term Agreement to Improve Income, Wages and Employment. Competitiveness”.

“This increase represents an increase of 60 euros per month and corresponds to the largest increase in the guaranteed minimum monthly salary ever seen, namely 7.9%,” the government emphasizes in the statement.

This proclamation takes place in a context of political crisis, in which the Prime Minister submitted his resignation on Tuesday, which was accepted by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, but has not yet been made official in the Diário da República. at that time the government will limit itself to management actions.

In the announcement he made to the country on Thursday, The head of state said he will postpone the government’s resignation process to allow for the approval and entry into force of the 2024 state budget proposal, for which a final global vote is scheduled for November 29.

The update of the national minimum wage is determined by government decision, after consultation with the social partners.

The value of 820 euros for next year is included in the agreement signed in October as part of social consultation between the government and the social partners, with the exception of CGTP and CIP – Confederação Empresarial de Portugal, which were left out.
