Livre questions the government about the detention of students in two Lisbon colleges

This Thursday, Livre questioned the Minister of the Interior, José Luís Carneiro, about the detention of student climate activists in two colleges in Lisbon, because there was a “disproportionality in the resources used and the type of force used.”

In a question addressed to the Minister of the Interior, Livre’s only deputyRui Tavares writes that “the media reported the arrest of three students at the University of Lisbon’s Faculty of Psychology while they were lecturing on climate action.”

“The footage shows over a dozen officers at the facilities and the detention of three activists. The action was part of a series of actions in schools to demand the end of fossil fuels by 2030 and 100% renewable and affordable electricity by 2025,” the demand reads.

The initiative states that this week “similar events took place at the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences (FCSH) of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa”.

“From what can be seen in the images photographed, filmed and made available by the media, There is a clear disproportion between the means used and the type of force used, in relation to what was at stake: the peaceful exercise of the right of opinion and demonstration,” said sole deputy Rui Tavares.

In this context, Livre asks the Ministry of the Interior for clarification on “what led to the events being considered so threatening that such an allocation of resources was necessary”, and also on “the measures applied – which appear to be disproportionate and disproportionate are”. further requested “the opening of an investigation into the facts”.

A total of nine students at the two colleges were arrested this week.

According to activist and police sources, six students were arrested in the early hours of Monday for refusing to leave the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences (FCSH) in Lisbon, which they occupied in protest against the climate.

The students accused the police of using violence and insults, allegations that the PSP did not comment on.

On Wednesday, three climate activist students from the University of Lisbon’s Faculty of Psychology were detained at the institution by the PSP.

According to a statement from the Student Climate Strike movement in Lisbon, the young people gave a lecture on climate action, with several dozen students participating. Two were arrested for giving the lecture, the other arrested just watched.
