The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, declared on Thursday that he was surprised by the events of November 7, when Prime Minister António Costa resigned due to a judicial investigation.

The head of state spoke to journalists at a hotel in Bissau, where he took part with Prime Minister António Costa in the official celebrations of the 50th anniversary of Guinea-Bissau’s independence.

“If you asked me how many days ago, I don’t even know, on the 6th [de novembro] — this is so fast and so intense — I thought if I were where I am now, I would say no,” the President of the Republic declared.

“Indeed, the circumstances arose and happened with the intensity they witnessed live. Obviously my idea was that the situation experienced on the 6th could be experienced over a longer period of time. he added.

The prime minister has resigned amid a judicial investigation into the installation of a data center in Sines and lithium and hydrogen companies, prompting the Public Prosecution Service to search several government offices and open an independent investigation at the Supreme Court. what it is aimed at.

When asked if he had any sign that this might happen, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa reiterated that he had not expected these events: “When I said I was surprised, of course it means I was surprised. So someone who is surprised means he doesn’t expect it to happen.”

Asked about the meeting he had on November 7 with the Attorney General of the Republic, Lucília Gago, at the Palace of Belém, who raised it and what the purpose of this hearing was, the head of state replied: “You first – Minister has already made it clear that he has asked me to ask the Attorney General of the Republic for an interview. I can’t say more than that.’
