“Where were they?”: the left criticizes the absence of Macronist deputies after the approval of a RN text in the Assembly

The left believes that the adoption this Thursday of a proposed resolution by the National Rally aimed at “denouncing” the Franco-Algerian agreement of 1968 was possible thanks to the absence of numerous Macronist deputies during the vote, including its leader Gabriel Attal.

Thunder in the Assembly: the deputies approved, by 185 votes to 184, a proposed resolution from the National Rally aimed at “denouncing” the Franco-Algerian agreement of 1968, with the support of the LR and Horizontes groups.

“It is a day that can be described as historic for the RN,” immediately greeted the leader of the far-right deputies, Marine Le Pen, highlighting that it was the first text of her party approved by the Assembly, since its initiatives have always been the object of opposition in principle.

A third of the EPR deputies present

Faced with this text that calls for denouncing the agreement that offers Algerians specific clauses regarding immigration and stay in France, the left denounced the weak absence of the Macronists during these elections. Only a third of the deputies of the Ensemble pour la République, 40 out of 92, were present at the Bourbon Palace. 30 voted against the text and three abstained.

“The weak mobilization of the Macronists allowed the extreme right to approve a hateful and phobic text towards Algeria,” denounced the group LFI sur X.

“We lost by one vote to block this far-right text. This defeat is a consequence of the alliance with LR and RN and the inconsistency of the Macronists who are not very present,” lamented deputy Alexis Corbière.

“The absence of the Macronists gave a victory to the RN”

The absence of Gabriel Attal, head of the Macronist party and the group in the Assembly, was especially highlighted. The former prime minister was present this Thursday morning at a forum on the sustainable transformation of tourism.

“Where were the Macronists? Gabriel Attal absent!” protested the first secretary of the PS, Olivier Faure, in X.

“We were missing a voice. This voice that we were missing to confront the RN is that of Gabriel Attal,” said Cyrielle Chatelain, president of the environmental group. “What we just experienced in the chamber is unacceptable,” he told reporters. “The absence of the Macronists gave a victory to the RN.”

Gabriel Attal himself called in January to denounce the 1968 agreement to “set the limits and assume the balance of power with Algeria”, especially in light of the arrest of the Franco-Algerian writer Boualem Sansal. But his group was against the RN text.

RN’s “parliamentary niche” continues

It should be noted that votes were missing in all groups, including the left: 52 LFI deputies out of 72, 53 socialists out of 69, 32 ecologists out of 38, six deputies from the communist and overseas group out of 17 participated in the vote. 12 deputies from MoDem participated in the vote (ten against, two abstentions) and three deputies from Liot out of 22 (two in favor, one against).

If the resolution has no legislative value, Marine Le Pen asked the Government to take “into account” the Parliament vote that took place during the party’s “parliamentary niche”, allowing it to have They have in their hands the agenda of the National Assembly this Thursday.

“We consider that there is nothing that justifies the maintenance of this convention,” he insisted. Before adding: “Very objectively, I see that the left is a bad loser since it multiplies howls, insults, defamations and questions of order. But they must understand that democracy is like that.”

Following this dramatic turn of events, the RN hopes to achieve a second victory in its bill to restore the crime of illegal residence. If time permits, RN will set other traps on the left, with a text to “limit banking fees”, inspired by a communist initiative, and another for “free hospital parking” also demanded by LFI.
