Marcelo says he met with the Attorney General of the Republic at Costa’s request

The President of the Republic said on Thursday that on the day of the Prime Minister’s resignation, he had met with the Attorney General of the Republic, at the request of António Costa, noting that the head of government had already clarified this himself.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa spoke to journalists at a hotel in Bissau, where he participated with Prime Minister António Costa in the celebration of Guinea-Bissau’s 50 years of independence.

Asked who led to the meeting he had with the Attorney General of the Republic, Lucília Gago, on November 7, and what the purpose of this hearing was, the Head of State replied: “The Prime Minister has already made it clear that he wants me to the Attorney General of the Republic to request a meeting.”

“I can’t say more than that,” he added.

On November 7, early in the morning at his request, the President of the Republic received the Prime Minister at the Palace of Belém, and then the Attorney General of the Republic, Lucília Gago.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa received António Costa for the second time in Belém. Returning from that meeting, the Prime Minister announced his resignation in a communication to the country.

Before this announcement to the country, a statement from the Public Prosecution Service was released stating that the Prime Minister was the target of an independent investigation opened at the Supreme Court.
