“The first obligation of the CDS is to guarantee the creation of the conditions so that, in every scenario, in every election, it can vote on its own, without being dependent on others. And I have no doubt that the CDS will return to the Assembly of the Republic on March 10,” Nuno Melo emphasized this Friday.
Speaking to the Lusa office, the centrist leader, who traveled to Coimbra to inaugurate the new district headquarters, admitted that it would make sense for the CDS/PP to present itself to the vote with a pre-electoral coalition.
“We thought it was important that a new cycle was opened, which would include a centre-right alternative. It requires clarity and demonstrates the arithmetic that a pre-electoral coalition would help elect center-right deputies who, in the absence of such a coalition, which would likely lose votes, will ultimately benefit Chega, the PS, opponents we want to defeat ” he added.
According to the chairman of the CDS-PP, “all signs” are that there will be no coalition before the elections.
“The Liberal Initiative has already stated that it will not form a coalition, prominent PSD leaders said more or less the same, but for the CDS this is no drama. The CDS is really prepared to go to the vote,” he said. .
According to Nuno Melo, over the past two years the CDS-PP has created the conditions to return to the Assembly of the Republic, “with as many deputies as the Portuguese want to give”.
“The CDS is a matter today, in the sense that there are many people who approach us on the streets, with whom we speak, messages that I receive, that say that the CDS is actually missing from the Assembly of the Republic, and that it has not been replaced by anyone else,” he concluded.
Portugal will hold early parliamentary elections on March 10, 2024, scheduled by the President of the Republic, following the resignation of the Prime Minister.
