OE2024: Pedro Nuno Santos takes the lead in replacing teachers’ time

On Wednesday, deputy Pedro Nuno Santos joined the PS in voting against the PSD’s proposal on reinstating teachers’ tenure, but said in an explanation of vote that he “generally agreed with the spirit” of the measure.

Last Wednesday, the PSD called for a plenary vote on its proposal for the complete replacement, but in a phased manner, of teachers’ service time, at a rate of 20% per year. The PS voted against, repeating the vote in the Budget and Finance Committee and dictating the leadership of the measure.

In an explanation of vote, Pedro Nuno Santos claimed to have voted against the Social Democratic proposal because he was “subject to voting discipline, as it is a budget issue”.

The deputy candidate for secretary general of the PS also weighed in “that the method for resetting the counting of teachers’ service time should be defined in negotiation and consultation with the organizations representing teachers, which should not be ignored”.

However, he pointed it out “generally agree with the spirit of the proposal”arguing that it is necessary “Continue to dignify the profession, value its employees and create conditions to make the career attractive to young people”.

In the debate preceding the vote, the PSD saw left-wing parties, namely the PCP and the Bloco de Esquerda, strongly criticizing it for now defending a measure it stopped in 2019, when it voted together with the PS (which did not had support). a majority in parliament) and blocked the full recovery of teachers’ time.

This proposal, accused bloc deputy Joana Mortágua, “is an exercise” in “historical revisionism” in which the PSD seeks to “erase the past.” PCP’s Alfredo Maia also recalled the moment in 2019, when the PSD voted alongside the PS.
