Pedro Nuno Santos says the PS is not running for elections because it is a ‘pillar’ for the PSD

The candidate for the position of Secretary General of the PS, Pedro Nuno Santos, emphasized this Saturday in Penafiel, in the Porto district, that his party is running for elections to win and not to “be a pillar of support for the PSD ”.

“It is very important to clarify the idea that the PS is a party that presents itself to win the elections [de 10 de março] and does not believe that elections should be a pillar of support for the PSD,” he said in a conversation with journalists.

Speaking at the entrance of a meeting of socialist supporters from the Vale do Sousa region, which took place at the auditorium of the Penafiel Business Association, Pedro Nuno Santos added that his candidacy “has always defended that the doors should not open to the right be closed and close the doors on the left”.

Therefore, he continued: “This dialogue must of course be maintained, but that is not all.”

If the candidate were to succeed António Costa in the Socialist leadership, It is “very important to be clear” about “the issues that can be discussed”.

The PS leadership elections, which will take place on the 15th and 16th, will also include José Luís Carneiro and Daniel Adrião.

Regarding the International Day Against Corruption celebrated on this day, Pedro Nuno Santos said that it is “important to remember, as leader of the Socialist Party, that the legislation that allows us to fight corruption more effectively is almost, in its entirety, the responsibility of PS governments”.

“The Socialist Party’s commitment to fighting corruption is not new, it is a commitment that has always existed and it will obviously be a commitment for the future,” he stressed.

Pedro Nuno Santos, on the other hand, highlighted “the statements of the Director of the Judicial Police, in which he said that he had never had so many resources to fight corruption”

“I believe that both the legislation and the strengthening of resources prove this, that there is a commitment from the Socialist Party to fight corruption,” he concluded.

The meeting that took place in Penafiel brought together a few hundred activists, leaders and mayors, most of them from the Porto district, including the leader of the federation, Eduardo Vítor Rodrigues.
