The Prime Minister, António Costa, responded to the PSD on Monday that the political cycle “may even have started with a defeat for the PS” in 2015, but “will certainly continue with a victory” for the Socialists in the 2015 early parliamentary elections. 10 March.
In the preparatory debate before the European Council, PSD bank vice-president Catarina Rocha Ferreira said that the PS’s absolute majority “does not make us forget the moments” when the Socialists received parliamentary support from PCP and BE. “parties that are against European construction and the European project”.
“For the future of the PS, it has been promised that we will once again join hands and hug with PCP and BE (…) The majority of the PSD wants to turn the page in the future to defend Europe, this PS record is a farewell, but it makes us afraid for the future,” he stated, emphasizing that this “era started with a PS defeat” in 2015.
In response, António Costa said he was baffled by the PSD’s intervention.
“If there was one thing that these years of rule showed, it was the across-the-board defeat of the right-wing government and its vision of austerity, which was crushed. Your recipe was a failure and the leftist recipe clearly won. the relationship with Europe,” he defended.
The Prime Minister also believed that, thanks to the PS government, “Portugal’s attitude towards Europe has changed”.
“We are no longer on our knees and in a submissive position and are now in a constructive position and our voices are heard and respected,” he stated.
To loud applause from the PS bench, António Costa admitted that “this political cycle may have started in 2015 with a defeat”, with the PS falling behind the PSD/CDS-PP coalition that failed to form a government at the time.
“But it will certainly continue with a victory for the PS on March 10,” he said.
