Montenegro: Education shows PS, BE and PCP incapable of even ‘honoring the left’

The PSD chairman on Thursday pointed to the situation in education as the biggest expression that PS, PCP and BE “are not even able to honor the left”, and questioned the credibility of the socialists who changed their position on teacher tenure .

During the PSD faction’s Christmas dinner, Luís Montenegro focused much of his speech on the way the “left” managed public education over the past eight years of PS governance.

“It was with PCP, BE and PS, the three great protagonists of left-wing politics – I say left, because they like to say right –, it was this left that was responsible for the largest support in our democratic politics. history to private education in Portugal. But privately for those who have money,” he criticized.

The PSD chairman said he was sure that “even people on the left are ashamed” of this situation and “they can no longer see themselves in this PS, this PCP and this BE”.

“Education, like health care, is today the biggest expression of which PS, BE and PCP are not even able to honor the left,” he criticized.

Still in this area, Montenegro recalled the PSD’s proposal, presented a few months ago, for the full restoration of the frozen service time of teachers, even if elections were not yet scheduled.

“We were practically insulted, they accused us of irresponsibility, of unpreparedness, even of demagoguery. This is the moment when the current Minister of Education and two ministers of this government now admit that the PSD was right, everything contrary to what they said a few weeks ago “, he said, in an implicit reference to PS leadership candidate Pedro Nuno Santos and his supporter Alexandra Leitão.

Montenegro wondered whether “these people, this political project have any probability, and immediately gave his answer:” I am convinced that no, it is a good thing to say that in the case of the PS it will not be ‘next year will be’. “In the case of the PS, now is the time to leave,” he said, referring to the early parliamentary elections on March 10.
