Costa calls for participation in the elections and promises all solidarity with the new leader

Outgoing PS Secretary General António Costa called for the mobilization of socialists in next Friday’s and Saturday’s elections to elect his successor, adding that the new leader will count on their total solidarity.

These positions are contained in a message that António Costa sent to all PS members this morning, on the first of two days of direct elections to elect the new general secretary of this party.

“Today and tomorrow [sábado] Let’s choose our new leader. I am sure that the socialists’ democratic choice will give the PS new energy. I therefore appeal to everyone to participate in these elections, making this vote a great confirmation of the strength of the PS.”wrote the outgoing leader of the Socialists.

In the same message, António Costa then emphasized that he will support his successor regardless of the choice of the members of his party.

“The new Secretary General will count on all my solidarity and, of course, the support of all activists, in the plural unity that is the hallmark of our PS,” he added.

This Friday and Saturday, around 60,000 socialist activists will choose António Costa’s successor as PS secretary general, in elections between José Luís Carneiro, Pedro Nuno Santos and Daniel Adrião.

In addition to the new party leader, the Socialists will elect 1,400 delegates (to which 1,100 will be added with inherent rights) to the national congress, which will take place between January 5 and 7, at the Lisbon International Fair.

This Friday, FAUL activists and those of the federations of Aveiro, Bragança, Castelo Branco, Évora, Guarda, Leiria, Portalegre, Oeste, Setúbal, Viana do Castelo and Vila Real will vote.

There will be elections on Saturday in the federations of Algarve, Baixo Alentejo, Braga, Coimbra, Porto, Santarém, Viseu, Azores and Madeira. Voting ends on Saturday at 11pm (indicative time).

The first election results will be announced at 11:30 PM at the PS national headquarters by the president of the Congress Organizing Committee (COC), Pedro do Carmo.
