Costa voted and left the door open to a new political future

The Secretary General of the PS, António Costa, said on Friday that, despite not yet having the praise of the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, addressed to him, he confirmed that he knows that “they were very nice ” and he still assumed he wasn’t old enough to retire.

“I don’t think any citizen will bring reforms to politics,” the current prime minister emphasized, when asked whether he plans to withdraw from politics. “As long as we are conscious, alive and free, we are political citizens,” he said, adding that “being a political citizen does not mean holding political office. We all actively participate in one way or another. I took part in We will soon see what the future will be like,” concluded the Socialist leader, on the day he went to the polls to choose his successor in the direct PS elections.

When asked how the President of the Republic held him responsible for his dismissal from the post of Prime Minister in early November, António Costa referred the decision to the ongoing legal proceedings. “It’s not worth it. Everyone knows what happened and I don’t think it matters right now. What matters now is that the page is turned. I did what my conscience dictated, because I I understand that. Anyone who is under official suspicion is not allowed to exercise the functions of Prime Minister. The President of the Republic has understood that in view of this he must call parliamentary elections. The elections have been called, the PS is now choosing a new leader. We will know tomorrow evening whoever the new leader is. On Sunday, the PS will all stand together and united behind its leader, to support him in a great victory on March 10. That is what matters,” he explained.

Regarding his participation in the election campaign for the parliamentary elections, which would take place on March 10, Costa assumed that he would be available to accompany the future leader of the party. “I will do what the new secretary general of the PS thinks I should do. I am a very disciplined activist,” he concluded.
