Pedro Nuno Santos was elected PS general secretary with 62% of the votes in direct elections held between Friday and Saturday. He competed against José Luís Carneiro, who finished in second place with 36%, and Daniel Adrião, who came in second place with 36%. 1% of the votes.

When he entered, PCP deputy Bruno Dias spoke, followed by the intervention of Chega’s leader, André Ventura, with the President of the Assembly of the Republic, Augusto Santos Silva, handing over the leadership of parliamentary work to Vice President Adão Silva. .

This election process in the PS opened with the resignation of António Costa from his position as Prime Minister, on November 7, after it was made public that he was the target of a judicial investigation opened by the Public Prosecutor’s Office at the Supreme Court of Justice. from Operation Influencer.

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, immediately accepted the Prime Minister’s resignation, decided to dissolve Parliament and scheduled early parliamentary elections for March 10.

António Costa was first elected general secretary of the PS on November 22, 2014, two months after winning the primaries for the party’s candidate for the post of prime minister, open to non-members, which he contested with then leader.
