“We assume our responsibilities”: in 49.3, Bruno Le Maire rejects opposition criticism

For the minister, if the opposition wanted to reach a compromise with the government, then it was necessary “to say that they were ready to vote for this budget”.

Bruno Le Maire persists and signs. Minutes after Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne activated article 49.3 of the Constitution, which allows the approval of the first part of the budget text without going through a vote, unless censorship is mentioned, the Minister of Economy, Finance and Industrial and Digital Sovereignty , guest of BFMTV, recalled once again that the executive “assumed his responsibilities.”

“The debate took place, with Gabriel Attal we spent some time in Parliament, it was a good debate, of quality, I want to pay tribute to the parliamentarians who participated massively”, he begins by greeting the president of the Finance Commission. Éric Coquerel and the general budget rapporteur, Jean-René Cazeneuve.

The minister was also offensive, assuring that he did not understand the criticism of the opposition illustrated by a motion of censure presented by the Nupes and by this National Group that will be announced on Thursday.

“I find it difficult to understand. If the opposition wanted a compromise, we had to tell ourselves that they were willing to vote for this budget, it was possible to reach a compromise. Since the opposition said from the beginning ‘we will never vote, it is too heavy a political act, so we can discuss to improve the text, that is what we did, but not to approve the text”, insists Bruno Le Maire.

According to him, the activation of article 49.3 was correct and obliges the government. “Now everyone takes their responsibilities, we take ours, we need a budget for France. The oppositions are free to take their own and present motions of censure,” he insists.

By way of conclusion, Bruno Le Maire finally assures “to prefer compromise to any other solution that may seem brutal”. In fact, the minister hopes, in the near future, to find “compromises” for the vote on other texts, including the PLFSS.
