PCP wants debate with government on rising cost of living on Wednesday

The PCP will propose a debate in Parliament’s Standing Committee on Wednesday, in the presence of the government, on the rise in the cost of living and profits of major economic groups.

In a proposal to the President of the Assembly of the Republic, Augusto Santos Silva, the communists propose that the Permanent Commission – a body that meets outside the effective working period of the Assembly of the Republic – summons the government of António Costa for a debate on Wednesday.

The proposal, signed by the PCP faction leader, Paula Santos, takes place on the day the government approves a package of measures to support families, to respond to the impact of inflation, which is expected to amount to around two billion euros. , according to news reports published in several newspapers.

The communists want parliament to talk to the government about the increase in the cost of living for the Portuguese, the growth of profits of economic groups and the “exacerbation of inequality”.

The PCP believes that inflationary pressures can only be countered with an increase in salaries and pensions and with restrictions on the rental market and the benefits of housing.

The party favors a tax on the extraordinary profits of the largest companies, which can be channeled to mitigate the effects of inflation.

If it happens, the debate will take place after the government’s announced measures, which should be approved today at an extraordinary meeting of the Council of Ministers.
