The President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, said he was “open” to postponing the retirement age to 64, and not 65 as he had promised during the presidential campaign, in the event of an extension of the contribution period. The opposition reacted strongly to this statement, which confirms that the pension reform will be applied until “the summer of 2023” with “four months of work a year” in addition.
“The pension reform is essential if we want to preserve our social model,” defended the President of the Republic on France 2 on Wednesday night.
“We will be in the front line to oppose”
“Retirement at 64 or 65 is neither useful nor desirable. It is profoundly unfair. Emmanuel Macron, under pressure from Brussels, announced this afternoon that he wants to gradually implement it starting this summer. The French can count on us to oppose it, writes on Twitter the president of the RN group in the National Assembly Marine Le Pen.
“The deputies of the RN will be in the front line to oppose it,” warns his right-hand man Jordan Bardella on Wednesday night.
On the other side of the hemicycle, the deputies from Nupes, and in particular those from La France insoumise, also harshly rebuked the President of the Republic.
“Macron confirms his retirement at the age of 65, rejected by a large majority of the French. It is a provocation, a blow, a threat of great regression”, launches Clémentine Autain.
The rebel deputy for Seine-Saint-Denis believes that “the response must be up to the task”, while the demonstrations should be organized in the coming weeks and two days of strike are planned: this Thursday, October 27 and Thursday, November 10.
