Moment of hesitation inside the Palace of the Bourbons. During a speech this Friday before the deputies of the National Assembly, the Minister of Solidarity, Autonomy and Persons with Disabilities, Jean-Christophe Combe, spoke about the situation of nannies in France and their salaries, and was the author of an exit he made jump into opposition.
“A nanny earns on average a minimum wage for each child she cares for. I mean, she usually takes care of three, so it’s wrong to say that a babysitter…” she began. before being interrupted by shouts from the opposition, particularly from the left of the hemicycle.
A long moment of hesitation followed, during which the minister no longer really knew what to say. “Yes sir, three Smic, three Smic on average, three children, three children,” he murmurs, before session chairman Sébastien Chenu calls the audience for Jean-Christophe Combe to continue.
Finally, the minister turns to the government bench and seems to realize his mistake. “A third of a Smic multiplied by three on average, so he really is a Smic. I’m sorry,” he said, to ironic cheers from the deputies.
“The disconnection is total”
On social media, the minister’s error provoked a strong reaction from some members of the opposition, including the rebel François Ruffin, who was ironic in his response.
“A minister who knows the subject: 4,000 euros for a childminder! Send him on an internship to care for young children for a month and we’ll see!” he wrote.
For his part, Nicolas Meizonnet, deputy Rassemblement national du Gard, pointed to the “disconnection” of the members of the government.
“A Macronie minister explains that a childminder earns 3 SMIC, or 4,000 euros net per month. After being questioned by a colleague, he changes his version. The disconnection is total … ”, he said writing.
“I have made a mistake”
At the end of the day, the minister himself amended on his Twitter account, assuring that he was not “disconnected”. “I was wrong and I humbly admit it,” he adds.
“Nursing assistants, like all early childhood professionals, are assured of my support, my recognition and my sincere respect for them,” he finally justifies.
On average, a French household must pay 9.70 euros per hour to access this service, that is, an hourly increase of 28 cents compared to 2021, revealed in early October the annual barometer of Yoopies, the service company for the home of the Worklife group. Unlike many industriesthe childcare sector has not revised its prices upwards in proportion to inflation.
