Lula’s win allows Portugal-Brazil rapprochement

“I have already had the opportunity to speak to President-elect Lula da Silva to personally congratulate him. We all miss Brazil very much and this is another opportunity to get closer as we celebrate the 200th anniversary of independence from Brazil”, António Costa on the sidelines of a visit to the site of the Web Summit, which will take place between November 1 and 4 in Lisbon.

The Prime Minister said the results of Brazil’s presidential elections are “a victory for democracy” and represent a “new hope for the world”, as Lula da Silva showed in his maiden speech after the results were announced that there was a “great Brazil’s contribution to the fight against climate change”.

“It was very important that the elections were contested, they were close, we all saw that it was almost counting down to the last vote,” added the leader of the socialist executive.

When asked about Jair Bolsonaro’s silence on the election results, António Costa preferred not to comment.

“What is important is that the Brazilians have chosen and that, with regard to Portugal, there is an opportunity to revive our relations,” he noted.

Costa also expressed hope that Lula da Silva will pass Portugal on his trip to Europe.

“Portugal’s doors are always open and the wish we have is that, with the president-elect traveling to Europe already before his inauguration, if he could come to Portugal, we would be very happy. We miss Brazil very much , we miss him very much,” said.

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was elected President of Brazil with 50.90% of the vote, beating Jair Bolsonaro (far right), who got 49.10%. At the age of 77, Lula da Silva becomes Brazil’s 39th president, having served two terms as head of state between 2003 and 2011. It is the first time in Brazil’s recent democratic history that a candidate has returned to the palace that Alvorada after a win in the second round.
