Pope Leo XIV, informed of the incident, was dismayed, according to the Italian media Il Tempo.
It is not the first time that the altar of St. Peter’s Basilica has been disfigured. Last February, a man also climbed up before throwing several candelabras dating back to the 19th century to the ground.
