“Irregular immigration”: Paris and Rabat want to “shorten deadlines” and “improve” readmissions

After a meeting with his Moroccan counterpart, Bruno Retailleau expressed his desire to act in particular on the “identification procedures for people whose origin is not documented.”

Paris and Rabat want to “shorten the deadlines” on the issue of “readmissions of Moroccan nationals in an irregular situation” in France to “improve the number of people readmitted”, declared this Tuesday, October 29, the French Minister of the Interior, Bruno Retailleau , in Rabat.

After a meeting with his Moroccan counterpart, he expressed his desire to act, in particular, on “the identification procedures for people whose origin is not documented.”

He added that “they will work in the coming weeks” on “a Franco-Moroccan roadmap to set objectives and methods.”

Bruno Retailleau had estimated before his visit that Morocco was a “safe country” where a certain number of readmissions could be “accelerated.”

The issue of readmissions is linked in particular to the granting by the country of return of a consular pass, an essential document in the absence of a passport.

“Morocco is willing to repatriate any irregular migrant”

An issue that returned to the headlines after the arrest in September of a Moroccan suspected of the murder of a student and who was under the OQTF.

“Morocco is willing to repatriate any irregular migrant who is certified as Moroccan and who has left Moroccan territory,” explained Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita in early October.

President Macron called on Tuesday, in a speech to the Moroccan Parliament, for a “natural and fluid cooperation” with Morocco against “illegal immigration” and “even more results” in this area.

Bruno Retailleau explained that he had agreed with his counterpart Abdelouafi Laftit “to directly follow this issue at our level, with regular updates on progress in border surveillance.”

“We have a framework that we want to deepen, whether in terms of return, the fight against networks or surveillance of land and maritime borders,” he added.
