Parliamentary niche: LFI wants to debate sexual consent and Macron’s dismissal

La France insoumise added to the texts that will be debated during its “niche” – its annual day reserved for the Assembly – a bill aimed at integrating the notion of consent into the definition of rape and a proposed resolution aimed at removing Emmanuel Macron.

The current French law on rape “gives rise to the absence of consent through violence, coercion, threat or surprise. Which means that without evidence of violence, coercion, threat or surprise, consent is presumed,” a representative said at the conference. press release from the Paris parliamentarian. Sarah Legrain, who will defend the text.

“It seems to me that this current definition is not in line with what we know about sexual violence,” he added.

The departure of the Minister of Justice

The Insoumis had already announced in February that they wanted to present this bill, but since then “the lines have moved,” estimated Sarah Legrain.

“The Minister of Justice said he was in favor (of this change in the law), which was not the case with his predecessor,” he added.

Since his appointment, Didier Migaud has spoken out in favor of the idea of changing the definition of rape in French legislation by integrating the notion of consent.

“We have kept the proposed resolution on the dismissal of Emmanuel Macron in the texts of our niche,” also announced the head of deputies of the LFI, Mathilde Panot.

Debates over Macron’s impeachment got off to a bad start

To do this, the Assembly will still have to consider the text admissible, as already happened in September. But the conference of presidents later refused to include it on the Assembly agenda.

However, the chances of success of this procedure are very low, since removing the president ultimately requires a two-thirds majority in the Assembly and the Senate.

These two texts respectively occupied the fourth and third positions in the rebel “niche” of November 28.

The first text to be studied that day will be a proposed resolution for a moratorium on the European free trade agreement with Mercosur.

Then will come the rebel bill to repeal pension reform. “There will be a majority in this chamber to vote in favor, even with Liot, even with LR who at the time did not want to vote in favor of this pension reform,” said Mathilde Panot, who confirmed that she will not reject the votes of the RN. for this vote.
