Canada “intends” to recognize the state of Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly in September in New York, said Canadian Prime Minister on Wednesday, July 30, a policy change that considers it necessary to preserve the hope of a solution of two states.
“Canada intends to recognize the state of Palestine during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2025,” said Mark Carney at a press conference.
The United Kingdom will recognize Palestine if Israel does not take certain measures
Canada is one of the 15 countries, with France, after sharing its “will” to recognize Palestine. An intention shared by a joint statement signed by Andorra, Australia, Canada, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta, Norway, New Zealand, Saint-Marin, Portugal, Spain and Slovenia.
This Thursday, Emmanuel Macron announced that France would officially recognize a state of Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly in September. For his part, the British Minister Preheir, Keir Starmer, announced on Tuesday that the United Kingdom would recognize Palestine if Israel does not take certain measures “to end the terrible situation in Gaza.”
An announcement criticized by Israel. The Hebrew prime minister accused his British counterpart of “rewarding the monstrous terrorism of Hamas” and showing “complacency towards jihadist terrorists.”
According to the AFP counting and verifications, at least 142 of the 193 UN Member States, including France, recognized the Palestinian State proclaimed by the Palestinian Management in exile in 1988. In May 2024, Ireland, Spain and Norway, joined a month later by Slovenia, had already been thrown in Europe.
