“Aren’t you ashamed?”: Nicolas Sarkozy addressed the signing session after his comments about teachers

The former President of the Republic generated controversy at the beginning of the month by evoking the “24 hours a week” of work of school teachers and these “six months a year.”

When going to sign his latest work on Friday, November 22 in a bookstore in Marseille, Nicolas Sarkozy came face to face with a man whose priority was not to sign his copy. fight time. This professor from the northern districts of Marseille took the opportunity to question the former head of state following his statements made two weeks earlier in the Var, during the “Meetings of the Future”.

“They tell me: ‘there are not enough officials in National Education’, but it is an incredible demagoguery. The condition of the school teacher, (…) is 24 hours a week” and “six months of the year (. ..), between holidays and weekends,” declared the former President of the Republic during this event. Nicolas Sarkozy also joked about the work time involved in preparing classes for kindergarten teachers.

“Aren’t you ashamed to expose the world of education to public opinion? Why do you lie? You know that we don’t work 24 hours a week. We work 43 hours,” said Nicolas Sarkozy Sébastien Fournier, while it can be seen in a published video online by his union, Snuipp-FSU 13.

Sébastien Fournier takes these figures from an information note by Depp (Directorate of Evaluation, Foresight and Performance) from October 2022. According to this document, the average weekly working day declared by primary school teachers was 43 hours. Half of those under 35 also said they worked at least 41 days while on vacation in a year.

“A legitimate right of response”

“If you want to talk to me about this, come and talk to me about it. If you want to bother us…”, Nicolas Sarkozy initially responds. “You retired at 57, I will retire at 67. We work every morning, we are at work at 7:30!”, continues Sébastien Fournier. At that moment, the former president decides to end the brief exchange: “Hey, man, goodbye!”

Interviewed by France Bleu Provence, Sébastien Fournier says he came face to face with Nicolas Sarkozy after purchasing his book. “At the moment of signing I wanted to start the discussion and it did not happen because I asked him to answer the truth and so, after 40 seconds, I was silently exfiltrated by his order of service.”

According to him, his intervention constitutes “a legitimate right of response.” “He also made very direct comments and was not worried about our reaction,” he justified. “We responded at the same level as him.”
