The PSD will include in its draft constitutional review lowering the legal minimum voting age from 18 to 16, a party source told Lusa.
According to the same source, the party chairman, Luís Montenegro, has presented to the PSD’s Permanent Political Commission, which he has just approved, a proposal to lower the legal minimum voting age to 16.
This is one of the proposals that will be included in the PSD’s constitutional reform project, which will be presented to the National Council this Thursday at a meeting scheduled for 9 p.m.
According to the current text of the Constitution, “all citizens over the age of eighteen have the right to vote, with the exception of the incapacities provided for in the general law”.
Chega opened a constitutional review process with the delivery to parliament of a constitutional review project that was approved on October 12. According to the constitution of the republic, “all other projects must be submitted within a 30-day deadline if a constitutional revision project is submitted,” with the deadline expiring on Friday.
In addition to Chega and the PSD, the PS and the Liberal Initiative have already indicated that they will come up with a project to amend the Basic Law.
Amendments to the Constitution must be approved by a two-thirds majority of the deputies (in the current parliamentary framework this implies the favorable votes of PS and PSD) and the President of the Republic cannot refuse to enact the revision law.
At the PSD, the work was coordinated by university professor and former Miguel Poiares Maduro, in collaboration with party vice presidents, representatives of the autonomous regions, with contributions from constitutional law professors and some former deputies.
