Teaching of the history of anti -Semitism, sanctions for students … what a government report advocates fighting anti -Semitism

The Government presented on April 28 the proposals of a report commissioned by Aurore Bergé on the fight against anti -Semitism. In particular, it offers several measures within national education. 42% of the people involved for anti -Semitism are under 35 years old.

An response to the resurgence of anti -Semitic facts in France from the attacks of October 7, 2023 in Israel. The Government received a report commissioned Monday morning in the morning on the occasion of the fight of the struggle launched last February.

“What is before us is not a wave is a substantive blade. It is the threat of a deep rejection of anti -Semitism,” said Aurore Bergé, the delegate minister for women, equality and the fight against discrimination.

466 Antisemitic acts in 3 months in schools

In 2024, a total of 1,570 anti -Semitic acts in France were identified, according to the Ministry of Interior. 42% of the people involved for anti -Semitism acts are under 35, they can be read in this report, which also indicates that between December 2024 and February 2025, 466 anti -Semitic acts were committed in the school environment.

What to push Marie-Anne Blad-Bonucci, professor of History at the University of Paris-8, and state councilor Richard Senghor, who wrote this report, to make government several educational recommendations.

Among these, we find “the recontextualization of the history of antisemi and racisms in school programs with the teaching of primary and repetition at different times of schooling.”

“Know your story”

However, there is already a week of education and actions against racism and anti-Semitism, organized in association with the interminiysterial delegation for the fight against racism, anti-Semitism and anti-LGBT (Dilcrah). From 2023, each student must have visited a memory place at least once during their education.

Among the recommended places, we find the Camp Des Miles, the Memorial Shoah or the Museum of Art and History of Judaism.

“Knowing the story that anti -Semitism will retire,” said Elisabeth Borne, the Minister of National Education, also present when this report is presented.

Towards the creation of a new crime

This work also recommends several judicial developments, such as “adapting the criminal response to the contemporary manifestations of anti -Semitic expressions to the sanction in particular the reflection of criticism of Zionism for anti -Semitic purposes.”

Specifically, this could lead to the creation of a new crime related to the provocation, destruction or denial of an internationally recognized state.

The presentation of complaints could also be facilitated for officials victims of anti -Semitic or racist acts by allowing “the administration to present a complaint instead of the victim’s agent.”

Sanctuarize sanctions at school

This report also requires “mandatory the commitment of disciplinary procedures against students authors of verbal violence of a racist or anti -Semitic nature with respect to a staff member or another student by introducing an adequate regulatory provision in the Education Code.”

Currently, nothing forces a director or director to punish a student for this type of fact.
