Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau responds to his opponent for the presidency of Republicans Laurent Wauquiez, head of the deputies of Les Répudicains, and ensures that he will remain in the government, this Sunday, May 4 in the gallery on Sunday.
“I will fulfill my duty and give my best,” he assures the minister that he believes that “when you love his country, we see France on the edge of chaos, we do not run away from his responsibilities.”
Bruno Retailleau, however, recognizes at the same time that “today, political conditions are not ideal since there is no majority in the National Assembly”, since the dissolution of the National Assembly in June 2024.
Wauquiez asks Retaille to choose between the minister and the head of LR
Laurent Wauquiez said his doubts on Saturday in an interview with the JDD about the viability for Bruno Retilleau to remain minister, while becoming president of the Les Républicins party.
“We cannot be a member of the government of François Bayrou and we have independently the word of the Republicans,” said the deputy of Haute-Loire.
“My conviction is that being Minister of the Interior today, with the explosion of immigration and insecurity is full time. (…) We cannot do everything,” he said elsewhere.
“That is why I propose that we embody together, with Bruno Retailleau, a strong and complementary duo, he in the ministry, I at the party,” says Laurent Wauquiez who encodes, as Bruno Retailleau, the presidency LR.
Retailleau claims to have a “free word”
Bruno Retailleau believes that the only element that could question the presence of his party within the Executive would be if the “essential convictions” of LR and the “fundamental interests of our nation” were “annoying”, without further details. “At the moment, this is not the case,” he said immediately.
The minister also claims a “free word”, although it is not the same political color as the head of government. “You just have to see the controversies that sometimes have awakened my positions,” he says.
When asked about Laurent Wauquiez, Interior Minister deplores the attacks of his opponent. “You don’t need to harm your competitor to try to improve,” he says.
The former senator, however, says that “will associate” Laurent Wauquiez with “the governance of (his) political family.” “The winner has a duty: join,” he swears.

Laurent Wauquiez had already presented his competitor to the president of the party on April 27 at BFMTV. Referring to an alleged lack of “independence” of the resident of Beauvau, who would be retained by the solidarity of the government, the deputy of Haute-Loire argued that he was enjoying “freedom of expression” by not being minister.
“I am a man of convictions. I would never stay if my convictions were damaged, simply,” Retilleau replied a few hours later in our set.
The Party for the Presidency of the Republicans practically tripled the number of party members: there will be 121,617 to decide among the two candidates during a congress in mid -May, the party said in a statement on Wednesday. A rapid increase that makes the vote result uncertain.
