In motion this Monday, May 26 in the prefecture of Hauts-de-Seine to reveal its device aimed at making the State “more effective in its fight against Islamism,” Bruno Retailleau took the opportunity to defend the idea of a constitutional review. It would be in a few words “that it would have many consequences,” he told the Interior Minister.
Bruno Retailleau thus proposed to add the following prayer in the Constitution: “No one can take advantage of their religion, their beliefs, its origins, to escape the common rule.” Because for the Interior Minister, the “Islamist entrustism” aims to “escape from the common rule”, “twist”, “gradually move it” and “influence it in such a way that it becomes compatible with Islamism.”
According to the Minister and President of LR, this mention in the Constitution “would resolve many things, particularly for a hospital director, for a school director, for a business manager, for a president of the Association.”
Bruno Retailleau, however, has few illusions about such constitutional review given the absence of a majority in Parliament and the “current political complex (…)”. In fact, a constitutional review must be voted by the majority of the two of the two Chambers of the Parliament gathered in Congress.
Marine Le Pen evokes a “copy and stuck” of the ideas of the RN
Bruno Retailleau’s proposal, however, did not escape Marine Le Pen. “Bruno Retailleau is no longer content to resume our ideas (to never apply them), now he is directly copying and paste,” he said in his X account.
This is not the first time that the RN has fun seeing the right in general and Bruno Retailleau in particular compromising the idea. In February 2020, when the minister was the head of Senators LR, a proposal for a constitutional law had been presented by Philippe Bas, Senator Les Républicins de la Manche and president of the Law Commission. In particular, he intended to include in the Constitution the following prayer: “No individual or no group can take advantage of their origin or religion to exonerate respect for the common rule.”
“The presidents in the Senate of the Les Républicins group, that of the UDI group and that of the Law Commission, thus recognize the seriousness of the work and the relevance of Marine Le Pen’s proposals,” had already reacted with an irony in the national concentration in the concentration A press release.
Because a very close formulation was already present in a constitutional law presented in April 2018 by Marine Le Pen. This proposed to modify article 2 by adding this sentence: “No individual, no group can take advantage of its origin or religion to exempt it or be exempt from it.”
