Two years before the presidential elections, the 40,000 activists of the Socialist Party were called to vote this Thursday, June 5 to designate who from Olivier Faure or Nicolas Mayer-Possignol would take the reins of the Rose Formation. His election fell into the first outgoing secretary at the expense of the mayor of Rouen: Olivier Faure obtained 50.9% of the votes against 49.1% for his competitor.
In the first round, Olivier Faure (42.21% of the votes) had ahead of a short boss Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol (40.38%). At the end of the elections, the third candidate, the leader of the socialist deputies, Boris Vallaud (17.41%), had indicated that he would vote for Olivier Faure on the tour after he specified that it was not a voting instruction addressed to his followers, but a “personal choice.”
“Thanks to the activists who renew their confidence tonight,” said Olivier Faure in X.
Union, yes, but which one?
The main challenge in the heart of this election was the strategy of the Left Union defended by the Socialist Party for the 2027 presidential elections. Because, although they agree on the principle, Olivier Faure and Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol were not in the same line as the exact perimeter that such union should have.
After being the lawyer of an alliance with France Rebelde for the last two legislative elections, in 2022 and 2024, Olivier Faure defended a very wide union that linked to the entire non -Mélenchonist left. An arch of Raphaël Glucksmann, the leader in the public square, to an ex-LFI like François Ruffin. And to designate the candidate who represents this union, Olivier Faure advocated the organization of a primary.
With among his allies, the president of the Occitanie region, Carole Delga or the mayor of Saint-Oue Karim Bouamrane, Nicolas Mayer-Possignol opposed any primary. He also considered that the best strategies for his training is to make him a “great socialist party” destined to gather “those who are in the PS and those who are outside” such as Raphaël Glucksmann, Benoît Hamon or former Prime Minister Bernard Cazeneuve.
Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol and his relatives also reproached Olivier Faure to handle the PS in a “clan” way and for being “ambiguity” against Jean-Luc Mélenchon and LFI, while Olivier Faure has multiplied the statements in recent months to distance himself from the leader of rebellious France.
