Mental health of young people: referents in schools at the beginning of the school year

The Ministry of Health revealed its plan this Wednesday, June 11 to improve the management of psychiatric disorders in France on Wednesday, June 11. References in Mental Health, responsible for identifying the first signs, will be identified in schools, from primary school to high school, from September 2025.

An answer to discomfort among young people? This Wednesday, June 11, the Government detailed a plan dedicated to psychiatric care and the broader issue of mental health. One of the components refers to its management within the school environment, to develop a synergy between the Ministry of Health and National Education.

Since the beginning of the 2025-2026 school year, each establishment of primary school to school will have to have two “reference points” responsible for detecting possible problems early. The widest objective, thanks to the training modules, is to lead to “the 100 % training staff of school health personnel,” the Ministry of Health explained.

“The largest period of vulnerability, a hinge in mental health, are young people, especially 12 to 25 years.”

Note that this announcement, already presented by the Ministry of Education a few weeks ago, has a series of shadows. Three months since next school year, training systems have not yet been completed and are still in preparation. The Ministry has not identified personnel who can guarantee the mission of referents: teachers, nurses or school doctors, educational assistants, etc.

“The objective is not to restrict, each one must have this vision to identify and, better addresses” these problems, we explain to the Ministry of Health.

The ministries also wish to use the “health reserve”, which are all students in the medical profession, so that they can intervene in classes and raise awareness about the challenges of welcome, stress management, etc.

The question of the mental health of young people is a regularly relevant concern, once again this week in the light of Nogent’s drama, in Haute-Marne, where a university has fatally stabbed a supervisor of the establishment.

The debates occur although at this stage the adolescent does not present a sign that evokes a possible mental disorder, according to the prosecutor, an affirmation that must be confirmed by experience during the procedure.
